Draper is the last Salt Lake County pickup before I-15 climbs Point of the Mountain, which makes it the natural start for a Moab week. The Utah Office of Tourism calls that drive 3.5 to 4 hours and the first sustained grade of it arrives about twenty minutes after the handover, so find the engine brake in the driveway rather than on the rise.

Why people rent an RV in Draper
Moab is three and a half to four hours south, and the climb out of town comes first.
The demand here points one way. Arches and Canyonlands are the two parks this end of the valley rents for, and the Utah Office of Tourism puts Moab at 3.5 to 4 hours, prefaced as a typical average barring inclement weather or other traffic events. The National Park Service says Arches is 236 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on one page and 230 from the airport on the same page, while the Office of Tourism says 229. Three figures, two agencies, one page carrying two of them. Take whichever you like and add the grade, but do not plan a first-night campsite as though the drive were three hours.
The second thing that shapes a Draper booking is what the Needles end of Canyonlands does to a vehicle choice, and that is a length question decided on the park's own page rather than on this one. The National Park Service warns separately that private vehicles exceeding 25 feet in total length may experience difficulties navigating to the park and have limited access to recreational areas once inside. Read the Canyonlands limits before you shortlist anything, because the road that refuses you is gravel and the recovery is not.
The third is the split between driving and towing, and Point of the Mountain is where it stops being theoretical. 324 of the 610 listings measured on 18 September 2026 drive and 286 tow. A loaded trailer on a sustained climb behaves nothing like a Class C, and neither listing says so. If you have never towed over a grade, book a drivable unit rather than finding out on I-15 with the valley already behind you.

Your contract may ban the gravel
The National Park Service warns that most rental agreements restrict vehicles to paved roads, and that backcountry recovery has cost people more than $2,000.
Where you collect it in Draper
Handovers here are driveways and yards either side of I-15, from the Traverse Mountains benches down to the frontage roads. Before you book near Draper
- Ask the host for height and width in writing. Only 80 of 610 listings publish a width, and Zion counts mirrors.
- Ask for the GVWR on the door plate. At 14,001 lbs or more, Utah's rental tax does not apply at any length of rental.
- Book the campsite before the vehicle. A site publishes a maximum length; a listing never refuses a site.

Getting over Point of the Mountain
The Traverse Mountains close off the bottom of the Salt Lake Valley and I-15 crosses the gap at Point of the Mountain. Once you are over it you are in Utah County and committed southbound, and there is no second attempt at the rise. Nothing about it is published as a restriction: UDOT's secondary highway table carries no entry for this stretch of I-15, and no width, length or weight prohibition applies. What it is instead is the first honest test of a vehicle you have owned for twenty minutes, with a full fresh tank on board if you filled one.

Timed entry is not required at Arches in 2026, which most RV guides still get wrong. The constraint that replaced it is physical: NPS tells oversize vehicles to leave the rig in town or in the visitor center lot, and the park has no dump station, so you empty tanks in Moab.

The Elephant Hill Access Road bans anything over 21 ft. It is an ordinary-looking two-wheel-drive gravel road to a major trailhead, and a 28 ft rig legal in both park campgrounds is illegal on it.

Dump stations and propane
No dump station and no propane supplier in Draper is named in any source this site can link, so none is published here, and the same is true of every campground you are heading for. Arches has no dump station and no electric, water or sewer hookups, and Canyonlands has no RV hookups either. Leave the valley with the fresh tank full and both waste tanks empty, and ask the host where they normally empty them, because a Moab leg gives you nowhere inside either park to fix it.

Nothing within reach of Draper is published with a length limit by anyone this site can cite, which is a gap rather than a permission. What is published sits at the far end of the drive: Devils Garden at Arches has 51 reservable campsites and no hookups or dump station, and both Canyonlands campgrounds cap at 28 ft. Those limits belong to the parks and are set out with their sources on the destinations pages. Book the campground before the vehicle, because the campground is the thing that refuses you.

Utah's 2.5% motor vehicle rate and the county's 7.00% tourism rate make up the 9.50% short-term lease row, and it sits on top of the ordinary sales and use tax rather than inside it. The off-highway column that would catch a travel trailer is blank for both the city and the county. A motorhome rated at 14,001 lbs gross vehicle weight rating or more is exempt from the motor vehicle tax at any length of rental under Utah Code 59-12-1201(5), so ask the host to photograph the door plate.
Draper is in Salt Lake County, so the county's own row applies. It is worth knowing the rate is not uniform across this market: Tooele County's short-term lease row is materially lower, and a Utah County pickup one exit south over the rise sits on a row this site has not read. If the difference matters to your budget, read the county's line on the Tax Commission chart before you choose a pickup on price. That average is for a car. A loaded motorhome climbing Point of the Mountain and then Soldier Summit country will sit at the long end of it or past it, so book a first night that does not depend on arriving before dark.
It is the first sustained grade on any southbound Utah trip and it arrives about twenty minutes after the handover, which is the part that catches people rather than the gradient. 286 of the 610 listings measured on 18 September 2026 are towables. If you have not towed over a pass before, book one of the 324 drivables instead. The grade is a poor classroom and there is no second attempt at it.

Each host chooses where the vehicle lives and whether they will move it, so the collection point is a per-listing question rather than a city-wide one. Confirm the address before you pay. A listing that reads as Salt Lake City can hand over 50 miles from the address you assumed.
No published figure separates day rates by pickup city. Hosts set their own rates and the marketplace does not break them out by where the vehicle is parked, so there is nothing to compare on price. What the location changes is the drive: a Draper or Lehi pickup starts south of the Point of the Mountain grade, an Ogden pickup adds the length of the Salt Lake Valley to a southbound trip, and a Park City pickup means the vehicle comes up Parleys Canyon before you ever see it. Pick the collection point by the direction you are driving. An Ogden pickup for a southern Utah trip costs you the whole valley on day one.
UDOT closes SR-39 at Ogden, SR-92 at Lehi, SR-190 in Big Cottonwood, SR-224 at Park City and SR-150 out of Kamas through the winter, in its own words typically November through May or June, depending on the weather. It publishes no fixed date for any of them, and the gate points and mileposts repeated elsewhere online are not UDOT's figures. Check udottraffic.utah.gov the week you travel, not the month before. A road that was open last season can be gated when you arrive, and a canyon road is a bad place to discover a motorhome's turning circle.
