Sandy sits at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon, so people here rent an RV for the canyon rather than for the interstate. Tanners Flat Campground is six miles up the road by the Forest Service's own reckoning, which makes this the shortest trip anyone in this valley takes and the one most likely to be refused at the site, so book the site before you book the vehicle.
610 listings sit within 50 miles of downtown Salt Lake City, measured on 2026-09-18. Published day rates across them run $30 to $1795 with a median of $165, before tax, fees, mileage, generator hours and any delivery charge the host sets. No separate count is published for Sandy, because the marketplace is searched by radius rather than by city boundary.

Why people rent an RV in Sandy
Tanners Flat is six miles up the canyon, and twelve of its thirteen bookable sites cap at 20 ft.
Little Cottonwood is a protected watershed, and Salt Lake City's rules allow camping in developed campgrounds only. There are two of them. Tanners Flat sits at 7,200 feet, six miles from Sandy, with paved spurs and no electric or water hookups, and its published season is 15 May to 20 September. Of its 48 site records on recreation.gov, 13 are bookable standard non-electric sites: twelve carry a maximum vehicle length of 20 ft and one carries 26 ft. The median published length across this whole market is 24 ft, so the ordinary rental in the valley fits exactly one bookable site in the nearest campground to Sandy. Read the length off the listing and then book the site, in that order.
The second is Albion Basin, near Alta, which the Forest Service says many years does not open for use until 4 July or later because of snow depth, and whose last 2.4 miles are maintained gravel. Of its open standard sites carrying a length, 17 are 25 ft and one is 20 ft. Between the two campgrounds, a canyon weekend from Sandy is a booking problem long before it is a driving problem.
The other thing the watershed decides is the dog. Salt Lake City prohibits dogs, horses and other domestic animals in the protected watershed canyons, which include Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood, because their waste reaches the drinking water. A dog in the plan means a different canyon, and it is better to know that before the rental is booked around it.
Six miles to the first campground
The Forest Service puts Tanners Flat six miles from Sandy at 7,200 feet. It is the shortest RV trip anyone in this valley takes, and the hardest to get a site for.

No dogs in the watershed
Salt Lake City prohibits dogs, horses and other domestic animals in the protected watershed canyons outright. It is a rule, not a request.
Where you collect it in Sandy
Collection here is a driveway on the bench or a yard off SR-209, not a counter. 67.9% of the 610 listings measured on 18 September 2026 offered delivery at a host-set fee, and a Sandy address near the canyon mouth is an ordinary residential drop: confirm the driver can turn the vehicle at your gate before you agree to it.
Ask for one photograph while you are agreeing the handover: the door plate. It carries the gross vehicle weight rating, which is the number Little Cottonwood reads. UDOT's class 3 traction rule turns on 12,000 lb and Utah's rental tax exemption turns on 14,001 lb, and neither authority mentions the other. 515 of the 610 listings carry a GVWR in the marketplace data and 95 publish none at all, so for roughly one listing in six the plate is the only place the figure exists. Get it before you drive to the canyon mouth, because the mouth is where the rule is enforced.
Do the walkaround before you point the vehicle up SR-210. The road climbs out of Sandy to Alta with no comfortable place to stop and reconsider, and the two campgrounds at the top of it cap twelve of thirteen bookable sites at 20 ft and seventeen more at 25 ft. The mirrors you have not set are the mirrors you will need first, and the reversing you have not practised is the reversing a 25 ft pad at Albion Basin will ask for.

Before you book near Sandy
- Ask the host for height and width in writing. Only 80 of 610 listings publish a width, and Zion counts mirrors.
- Ask for the GVWR on the door plate. At 14,001 lbs or more, Utah's rental tax does not apply at any length of rental.
- Book the campsite before the vehicle. A site publishes a maximum length; a listing never refuses a site.

Getting up Little Cottonwood
SR-210 is not on UDOT's list of roads closed through the winter, which is why it carries a traction law instead of a gate. UDOT's Cottonwood Canyons page states that Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood have stricter traction requirements than other roads, that requirements can be put in place 24 hours before a storm begins, and that when the beacons outside the canyons are flashing every vehicle needs at least 5/32 inch of tread depth. The rule it quotes, R920-6-4(3)(c), lets the department require traction devices on all rear drive tyres of a vehicle rated at 12,000 lb GVWR or more that does not have all-wheel or four-wheel drive. 142 of the 514 usable GVWR figures in this market sit at or above that rating. Check udottraffic.utah.gov on the morning you drive rather than the week before, and get the plate figure from the host before you book a February weekend.

Dump stations and propane
Neither Tanners Flat nor Albion Basin has electric or water hookups, and no dump station or propane supplier in Sandy is named in any source this site can link. So the canyon trip is a dry one by default. 389 of the 610 listings measured on 18 September 2026 publish a fresh water tank, median 40 gallons, and 221 publish none at all. Ask for the tank size and arrive with it full. Six miles up a canyon with no water is a short drive back down, but it is a drive you will make in the dark.
Campgrounds within reach
Tanners Flat: 13 bookable standard non-electric sites, twelve capped at 20 ft and one at 26 ft, season 15 May to 20 September, paved spurs, no hookups. Albion Basin: 17 open standard sites at 25 ft and one at 20 ft, 2.4 miles of maintained gravel at the end, and many years no opening until 4 July or later. Camping anywhere else in the canyon is prohibited by Salt Lake City's watershed rules. Reserve the site first, because the length bar is published on the site and not on the listing.

Utah's 2.5% motor vehicle rate and the county's 7.00% tourism rate make up the 9.50% short-term lease row, and it sits on top of the ordinary sales and use tax rather than inside it. The off-highway column that would catch a travel trailer is blank for both the city and the county. A motorhome rated at 14,001 lbs gross vehicle weight rating or more is exempt from the motor vehicle tax at any length of rental under Utah Code 59-12-1201(5), so ask the host to photograph the door plate.
Sandy is a Salt Lake County address, so the county's row applies rather than a lower one from over a county line. The exemption worth checking is the weight one: Utah Code 59-12-1201(5) exempts a motor vehicle rated at 14,001 lbs gross vehicle weight rating or more, and 100 of the 514 usable GVWR figures in this market are at or above it. The same door plate you photograph for UDOT's 12,000 lb traction threshold answers the tax question too. Neither authority mentions the other, so one photograph closes two questions before you pay a deposit.

Sandy RV rental questions
SR-210 stays open through the winter, so there is no seasonal gate, but UDOT's class 3 traction rule applies to it and to Big Cottonwood. Under R920-6-4(3)(c) the department may require traction devices on all rear drive tyres of a vehicle rated at 12,000 lb GVWR or more without all-wheel or four-wheel drive. 142 of the 514 usable GVWR figures in this market are at or above that. Get the plate figure in writing before you book a winter weekend, because the enforcement point is the canyon mouth rather than the car park at the top.
Up the canyon, only in a developed campground: Salt Lake City's watershed rules allow camping in developed campgrounds in all protected watershed canyons and nowhere else. That means Tanners Flat, six miles up with 13 bookable standard sites, twelve of them capped at 20 ft, or Albion Basin near Alta with 17 sites at 25 ft, reached by 2.4 miles of gravel and often closed until 4 July. Book the site before the vehicle. A 24 ft rental, which is the market median, fits one bookable Tanners Flat site.
Not into Big Cottonwood or Little Cottonwood. Salt Lake City states that dogs, horses and other domestic animals are prohibited in protected watersheds because their waste can end up in the drinking water, and both Cottonwood canyons are on the protected list along with City Creek, Emigration, Parleys, Lambs and Dell. Pick a canyon outside the watershed or leave the dog at home. Finding this out at the canyon mouth turns a booked weekend into a drive back down.
67.9% of listings offered delivery when this market was measured, each host setting the fee. A Sandy drop is an ordinary driveway handover, so confirm the driver can turn the vehicle at your gate. Delivery changes where the vehicle arrives and changes nothing about what the door plate says, and in February that plate is the number the canyon reads.
No count is published for Sandy on its own, because the marketplace is searched by radius rather than by city boundary. Across the whole 50 mile radius around downtown Salt Lake City on 2026-09-18 the count was 610: 244 travel trailers, 151 Class C, 78 camper vans, 58 Class B, 37 Class A, 22 toy haulers, 12 fifth wheels and 8 folding trailers. Search on your own dates rather than on that total, because availability is what decides the booking.
Every listing measured for this market sits within 50 miles of downtown Salt Lake City, which covers Salt Lake City itself, West Valley City, West Jordan, Sandy, Draper, Lehi, Provo, Ogden, Park City and Tooele. Each host chooses where the vehicle lives and whether they will move it, so the collection point is a per-listing question rather than a city-wide one. Confirm the address before you pay. A listing that reads as Salt Lake City can hand over 50 miles from the address you assumed.
No published figure separates day rates by pickup city. Hosts set their own rates and the marketplace does not break them out by where the vehicle is parked, so there is nothing to compare on price. What the location changes is the drive: a Draper or Lehi pickup starts south of the Point of the Mountain grade, an Ogden pickup adds the length of the Salt Lake Valley to a southbound trip, and a Park City pickup means the vehicle comes up Parleys Canyon before you ever see it. Pick the collection point by the direction you are driving. An Ogden pickup for a southern Utah trip costs you the whole valley on day one.
UDOT closes SR-39 at Ogden, SR-92 at Lehi, SR-190 in Big Cottonwood, SR-224 at Park City and SR-150 out of Kamas through the winter, in its own words typically November through May or June, depending on the weather. It publishes no fixed date for any of them, and the gate points and mileposts repeated elsewhere online are not UDOT's figures. Check udottraffic.utah.gov the week you travel, not the month before. A road that was open last season can be gated when you arrive, and a canyon road is a bad place to discover a motorhome's turning circle.
