What decides the vehicle
Away from a hookup loop, the trip runs on what the vehicle carries, and this market publishes that unevenly. 389 of the 610 listings measured give a fresh water tank size. 221 give none at all, so on more than a third of this market the number that decides how long you can stay out is simply absent from the listing.
Among the 389 that do publish one the median is 40 gallons, with a range from 2.5 to 500. Power is published more often: 515 listings publish a generator or solar and 95 publish neither, which means on those 95 the only electricity is whatever the battery arrived with.
The collision is the part worth planning around. The two classes that suit a forest road best, because they are short enough to turn on one and narrow enough to pass on one, carry the smallest tanks in the market. The median published fresh tank is 21 gallons for a Class B and 22 for a camper van, against 72 for a Class A and 42 for a travel trailer. The vehicle that can reach the site holds roughly half the market median of water once it gets there.
Where you may legally stop is a separate question with a clearer answer. BLM Utah publishes a 14 day limit on any one campsite, free and with no permit, except where posted, and the sign at the site is the operative document rather than any web page.

What to rent for this trip
Class B RV
A Class B is a factory van converted into a motorhome, which means it parks in an ordinary bay and usually has a toilet and a shower inside it. Fifty-eight were listed within 50 miles of downtown Salt Lake City, from $129 to $625 a night, median $249, the second highest median in this market.
Camper Van
A camper van is a van with a bed, a galley and usually no bathroom, and it suits one or two people who would rather drive every road than stand up inside. Seventy-eight were listed within 50 miles of downtown Salt Lake City, from $79 to $500 a night, median $186.50.
Class C RV
A Class C is the motorhome built on a van cab with a bed over the cab, and it is the usual choice for a family of four to six who want a bathroom, a kitchen and a vehicle that drives like a large van. It is also the biggest class in this market: 151 were listed within 50 miles of downtown Salt Lake City, from $65 to $695 a night, median $219.
What to settle before you leave the valley
- 1Ask for the fresh water tank in gallons before you book. 221 of the 610 listings publish none, and it is the number that decides how long you can stay out.
- 2If the plan is a forest road, check the tank twice. A Class B publishes a median of 21 gallons and a camper van 22, against a market median of 40.
- 3Confirm the vehicle has a generator or solar rather than assuming. 95 of 610 publish neither.
- 4Read the sign at the site, not a web page. BLM's stay limits are statewide and the posted rule at a given site overrides them.
- 5Fill before you drive up. At Dead Horse Point there is no water for RV fill-ups anywhere in the park, and BLM's Horsethief publishes no water either.

How far ahead should I book?
385 of the 610 listings measured came from an owner publishing a single vehicle. One vehicle is one calendar with no substitute unit behind it, so the rig you want is either free on your dates or it is not. Campground reservations are the harder constraint: Zion's Watchman takes bookings six months out, South Campground only 14 days out, and Bryce's Sunset Campground 14 days against North Campground's six months.
Will a host deliver it?
Delivery was offered on 67.9% of listings when the market was measured, at a fee the host sets. This site arranges none of it and quotes no fee. Confirm the address takes the vehicle's length and its turning circle before accepting a drop.
What size clears the most of Utah?
Under 20 ft clears every published road limit, including Bryce Point Road and Paria View Road, which close to RVs above 20 ft and to anything towing. Under 21 ft keeps the Elephant Hill Access Road at Canyonlands. Up to 28 ft keeps both Canyonlands campgrounds. Above 35 ft 9 in the Zion highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance is closed to you, with no permit available since 7 June 2026.

Before you book
The rental is the flexible half of this trip. The campsite, the closure or the season belongs to somebody else's calendar, so settle that first, then pick from the 610 listings measured within 50 miles of downtown.

Zion allows six people and one RV per campsite, so a party of twenty in Utah is four reservations however many beds the rigs carry. Book the campsites before you choose the vehicles.

Utah's general rifle buck deer hunt runs 17 to 25 October 2026, nine days that do not move. The Forest Service caps a developed site at seven consecutive days on most of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache, so the nine days only fit on dispersed ground.

Pick for the narrowest road, not the widest bed
The length band decides which roads stay open to you for the whole trip, and it is the hardest thing to change once the booking is accepted. Everything else is negotiable.
