Speed Week on the Bonneville Salt Flats

Speed Week at Bonneville, where the Bureau of Land Management publishes no water and no facilities on the flats, tells spectators to leave each day, and where SCTA has not yet dated the 2027 meeting.
What decides the vehicle
You cannot sleep on the salt. The only Bureau of Land Management statement found on the question sits in a press release dated 10 August 2017: all spectators and participants are required to leave the Bonneville Salt Flats to find camping or other accommodations each day. BLM's current Special Recreation Management Area page for the flats says nothing about camping, and nothing about water, restrooms or any other facility either. BLM Utah's statewide dispersed camping fact sheet does speak: free dispersed camping is allowed throughout BLM Utah managed lands except where posted, with no fees, permits or passes, and a 14 day limit on any one campsite. The operative words are except where posted, which puts the decision on the sign at the site rather than on anything you can read before you leave.
The 2027 dates are not published by anyone, and the two official sources disagree about 2026. The Southern California Timing Association, which runs Speed Week, dates the 2026 meeting 31 July to 6 August. BLM's own 2026 exclusive-use calendar gives Speed Week a wider window, 27 July to 8 August, and neither page explains the gap between them. BLM's is the access closure and SCTA's is the racing, which is a reading rather than a statement, so print both and confirm with the BLM Salt Lake Field Office. Neither body publishes anything for 2027: SCTA shows Coming Soon against the date and against the 2027 spectator fees, which it sells only at the event, and BLM's page carries no 2027 calendar. Note also that the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association's World of Speed is a separate event from Speed Week.
During permitted racing and private events in 2026 the salt flats are temporarily closed to general access, and BLM's 2025 announcement spells out what that means: closed to all vehicles and visitors except law enforcement, emergency vehicles, event personnel, participants and BLM staff, under 43 CFR 8364.1. The paved road and the parking area stay open, and visitors may still travel up to 100 feet onto the salt from the portal sign. Outside events BLM says driving is permitted pending seasonal closures, and that motor vehicle use is limited by a spring closure when the salt is moist or has standing water, with dates that vary and are posted by sign rather than announced. Two official sources also disagree on the distance: BLM puts the flats 120 miles west of Salt Lake City, the Utah Office of Tourism puts them at 110. Carry your own water and budget fuel on the longer figure, because a dry camp you did not plan for is a night in Wendover at whatever the rate is that week.

What to settle before you leave the valley

Is there water or a dump station at the salt flats?
BLM's page for the Bonneville Salt Flats publishes nothing about water, restrooms or any other facility, and does not say where the nearest are. Treat it as a dry site, carry fresh water in and plan the dump before you go. Day-use itself is free, per BLM.

Two official sources disagree. BLM states the flats are located 120 miles west of Salt Lake City in Tooele County. The Utah Office of Tourism says 110 miles west and calls it a day trip. Both are current, so budget fuel on the longer figure.
How far ahead should I book?
385 of the 610 listings measured on 2026-09-18 came from an owner publishing a single vehicle. One vehicle is one calendar with no substitute unit behind it, so the rig you want is either free on your dates or it is not. Campground reservations are the harder constraint: Zion's Watchman takes bookings six months out, South Campground only 14 days out, and Bryce's Sunset Campground 14 days against North Campground's six months.
Will a host deliver it?
Delivery was offered on 67.9% of listings when the market was measured, at a fee the host sets. This site arranges none of it and quotes no fee. Confirm the address takes the vehicle's length and its turning circle before accepting a drop.
What size clears the most of Utah?
Under 20 ft clears every published road limit, including Bryce Point Road and Paria View Road, which close to RVs above 20 ft and to anything towing. Under 21 ft keeps the Elephant Hill Access Road at Canyonlands. Up to 28 ft keeps both Canyonlands campgrounds. Above 35 ft 9 in the Zion highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance is closed to you, with no permit available since 7 June 2026.
Does this site book the RV?
No. It is a finder. Listings are published by their owners on the marketplace, the host accepts or declines the booking, and the money never passes through this site. Some links here are affiliate links that pay a commission from the marketplace rather than from your total.

Of the 610 listings measured on 2026-09-18, all 610 published a length, 86 published a height and 80 published a width. Zion measures the last two, with mirrors counted, so those come from the host in writing.

Other trips
Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef in one loop, planned around Bryce Point Road's 20 ft bar and Elephant Hill's 21 ft rather than the number of beds.

Collecting an RV after you land at SLC International, where the airport publishes two height gates and no price for the vehicle that will not fit under them, so the handover has to be agreed off-airport before you book the flight.
Sundance moved to Boulder for 2027, so a Park City January is now a ski week. The town publishes no public overnight RV parking, and the nearest state park campground cannot be reserved in January at all.
Zion allows six people and one RV per campsite, so a party of twenty in Utah is four reservations however many beds the rigs carry. Book the campsites before you choose the vehicles.
Utah's general rifle buck deer hunt runs 17 to 25 October 2026, nine days that do not move. The Forest Service caps a developed site at seven consecutive days on most of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache, so the nine days only fit on dispersed ground.

Pick for the narrowest road, not the widest bed
The length band decides which roads stay open to you for the whole trip, and it is the hardest thing to change once the booking is accepted. Everything else is negotiable.
