Hunting season on Utah public land

Utah's general rifle buck deer hunt runs 17 to 25 October 2026, nine days that do not move. The Forest Service caps a developed site at seven consecutive days on most of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache, so the nine days only fit on dispersed ground.
What decides the vehicle
The dates are fixed and they are the same for everybody. Page 8 of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources 2026 Big Game Field Regulations Guidebook sets the general seasons: archery buck deer 15 August to 11 September, muzzleloader buck deer 23 September to 1 October, early any legal weapon buck deer 7 to 11 October, any legal weapon buck deer 17 to 25 October. Bull elk on any-bull units runs 3 to 9 October early and 10 to 16 October late, spike units take any legal weapon 3 to 15 October, and the muzzleloader elk hunt is 28 October to 5 November. Count the inclusive days, which DWR never does for you, and the general rifle buck deer hunt is nine days long. Every rifle deer hunter in the state is bidding for the same nine nights of rental calendar.
The Salt Lake valley cannot be the hunt. DWR's own restriction list for Salt Lake County says you may not hunt buck deer or bull elk with a rifle or muzzleloader south of I-80 and east of I-15, that Emigration Township is restricted to archery tackle only, and that big game may not be hunted within half a mile of Silver Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood both sit inside the I-80 and I-15 box, and DWR publishes the map at hunt.utah.gov rather than in the guidebook. A rental collected on the valley floor is therefore transport to the unit, not a base at it, and day one of a nine day hunt is a driving day unless you leave the night before.
Where it legally sleeps is governed by two agencies who write the limit differently. BLM Utah allows free dispersed camping throughout BLM Utah managed lands except where posted, with no fees, permits or passes, and a 14 day limit on any one campsite. The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forests run Forest Supervisor's Order 04-19-22-533, which caps a developed site at seven consecutive days in one location on most ranger districts, fourteen on the Evanston and Mount View district, and a general undeveloped area at 14 days in any 30 day consecutive period. Set the nine day rifle deer hunt against that pair and the answer is specific: a developed Forest Service campground on most of that forest runs out two days early, and a dispersed site does not. Neither agency states the collision, because neither publishes hunt dates.
Dispersed means no hookup, no dump and no potable water, so the tank is the clock. Of the 610 listings measured within 50 miles of downtown Salt Lake City on 18 September 2026, 389 publish a fresh water tank and 221 publish nothing at all. Among those that do the median is 40 gallons, and the two classes that handle a forest road carry the least: 21 gallons in a Class B and 22 in a camper van. Power splits the same way, with 515 of the 610 publishing a generator or solar and 95 publishing neither. Ask for the fresh tank in gallons and the power source in writing before you book, because breaking camp to refill costs a morning out of nine.
The assumption worth correcting is that this is a park trip. It is not. The same guidebook states that all of Utah's national parks and monuments, apart from the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments, are closed to hunting. Zion's length bar and Bryce Point Road's do not bind a hunting rental at all; the forest road and the dispersed pull-out do. DWR is silent on the rest. The word camping appears twice in the guidebook's 76 pages, neither time about lodging, and the one place it does appear is a definition worth reading: during a muzzleloader hunt you may not possess a rifle or shotgun while in the field, and you are not in the field if you are in an established camping area or travelling in a fully enclosed automobile or truck. DWR does not say whether a motorhome is a fully enclosed truck, or whether a dispersed pull-out is an established camping area. Ask a DWR office rather than guessing, because the guess is a weapons offence.
No 2027 date exists to book against. The 2026 application period ran from 8 a.m. on 19 March to 11 p.m. on 23 April with drawing results by 31 May, and remaining permits went over the counter from 7 July. For 2027 there is nothing: no general season dates and no application period in either 2026 guidebook, none on DWR's big game page, and none served in the wildlife events calendar page itself. The only 2027 item in print is the sportsman permit, and even that is given as late October 2026 without a day attached. What to settle before you leave the valley

Can I hunt in the canyons above Salt Lake City?
Not with a rifle or a muzzleloader for buck deer or bull elk. DWR's Salt Lake County restrictions prohibit that south of I-80 and east of I-15, which is where Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon both sit. Emigration Township is restricted to archery tackle only, and big game may not be hunted within half a mile of Silver Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Part of Alta is closed to hunting outright. DWR publishes the maps at hunt.utah.gov and tells hunters to check county and municipal ordinances as well.
Where can an RV legally park overnight during a hunt?

How far ahead should I book?
385 of the 610 listings measured on 2026-09-18 came from an owner publishing a single vehicle. One vehicle is one calendar with no substitute unit behind it, so the rig you want is either free on your dates or it is not. Campground reservations are the harder constraint: Zion's Watchman takes bookings six months out, South Campground only 14 days out, and Bryce's Sunset Campground 14 days against North Campground's six months.
Will a host deliver it?
Delivery was offered on 67.9% of listings when the market was measured, at a fee the host sets. This site arranges none of it and quotes no fee. Confirm the address takes the vehicle's length and its turning circle before accepting a drop.
What size clears the most of Utah?
Under 20 ft clears every published road limit, including Bryce Point Road and Paria View Road, which close to RVs above 20 ft and to anything towing. Under 21 ft keeps the Elephant Hill Access Road at Canyonlands. Up to 28 ft keeps both Canyonlands campgrounds. Above 35 ft 9 in the Zion highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance is closed to you, with no permit available since 7 June 2026.

Of the 610 listings measured on 2026-09-18, all 610 published a length, 86 published a height and 80 published a width. Zion measures the last two, with mirrors counted, so those come from the host in writing.

Other trips
Zion, Bryce, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef in one loop, planned around Bryce Point Road's 20 ft bar and Elephant Hill's 21 ft rather than the number of beds.
Winter RV use out of the Salt Lake valley, where the binding constraint is UDOT closing SR-150 and six other state routes on no published date, rather than anything the parks enforce.
Collecting an RV after you land at SLC International, where the airport publishes two height gates and no price for the vehicle that will not fit under them, so the handover has to be agreed off-airport before you book the flight.
Sundance moved to Boulder for 2027, so a Park City January is now a ski week. The town publishes no public overnight RV parking, and the nearest state park campground cannot be reserved in January at all.
Speed Week at Bonneville, where the Bureau of Land Management publishes no water and no facilities on the flats, tells spectators to leave each day, and where SCTA has not yet dated the 2027 meeting.
Zion allows six people and one RV per campsite, so a party of twenty in Utah is four reservations however many beds the rigs carry. Book the campsites before you choose the vehicles.

Pick for the narrowest road, not the widest bed
The length band decides which roads stay open to you for the whole trip, and it is the hardest thing to change once the booking is accepted. Everything else is negotiable.
